How Megan Rapinoe of USA send France out of World Cup.

Megan Rapinoe did it again. And again.

Team USA’s co-captain scored in the fifth minute to give the U.S. an early lead on France in the Women’s World Cup quarterfinal, and the team never looked back, defeating the host country, 2-1, Friday at Parc des Princes in Paris.

France scored off of a set piece from Wendie Renard in the game’s 81st minute.

USA’s Tobin Heath also landed a ball in the net 75 minutes into the game. USA’s Crystal Dunn, who crossed to Heath for her goal, was deemed offside, and the goal was declared invalid.

Rapinoe has scored five goals in the tournament after netting both goals in USA’s 2-1 win over Spain in the Round of 16 on Monday and scoring one of its 13 goals in the opener against Thailand.

The U.S. will face England in the semifinals Tuesday at Stade de Lyon in Lyon.

How Platini was questioned and released.

PARIS (AP) Former UEFA president Michel Platini was released from custody in the early hours of Wednesday after being questioned as part of a corruption investigation into the awarding of the 2022 World Cup to Qatar.
His communication team said that Platini’s detention ended at 12:30 a.m. local time.
Platini had denied any wrongdoing and French authorities did not announce any charges against the former France and Juventus player.
“It was long, but given the number of questions it could not be different,” Platini said after his release. “They asked me questions about the 2016 Euro, the World Cup in Russia, the World Cup in Qatar, the Paris Saint-Germain, FIFA.”
Also questioned Tuesday were Sophie Dion, a sports adviser in former French president Nicolas Sarkozy’s administration, and Claude Gueant, the former secretary general of the Elysee presidential palace under Sarkozy.
Ahead of the FIFA vote, Sarkozy hosted a meeting in November 2010 that brought Platini together with Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani, then the crown prince of Qatar and now its ruling emir. Al-Thani also owns the French soccer club Paris Saint-Germain, and Sarkozy frequently attends its games.
Qatar beat the long-favored United States 14 to 8 when FIFA selected the host country for the 2022 World Cup
As head of European soccer’s governing body UEFA, Platini was the continent’s top representative on the FIFA committee that picked Qatar.
French prosecutors are known to be investigating an array of winning bids for major sports events, including the 2018 World Cup, awarded to Russia, the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo and track and field world championships.

How Nigeria was trashed by France in World Cup.

France completed World Cup group play with a 3-0 record for the first time, beating Nigeria 1-0 Monday night at Rennes when Wendie Renard converted a penalty kick in the 79th minute after missing her first attempt but getting a second chance.

France will play a third-place team on Sunday at Le Havre in the round of 16, and the winner will advance to a quarterfinal against the United States, Sweden or Spain.

Referee Melissa Borjas of Honduras awarded the penalty kick when Viviane Asseyi was knocked over by Ngozi Ebere, a call upheld in a video review and one that drew vehement protests from the Super Falcons. Eberle was given her second yellow card of the match for the foul, causing Nigeria to finish a player short.

Renard’s initial attempt was wide to the right of goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie, but Borjas ordered the kick retaken because Nnadozie came off the line before the ball was kicked. Renard’s second try went in to Nnadozie’s right for her third goal of the tournament.

A crowd of 28,267 watched host nation Les Bleues outshoot Nigeria 22-2 and hold 69 percent possession. France advance to the knockout stage for the third straight World Cup.

Nigeria finished third in Group A with three points and a minus-two goal difference, and the Super Falcons will have to wait to find out whether they can advance as one of the four top third-place teams. Nigeria has played in every Women’s World Cup but advanced past the group stage just once, reaching the quarterfinals in 1999.

How more African Countries suffer defeat in World Cup.

MONTPELLIER, France (Reuters) – Defender Kadeisha Buchanan scored on the stroke of halftime to hand Canada a winning start to the women’s World Cup as they edged Cameroon 1-0 at a rainy Stade de La Mosson on Monday.

Buchanan came storming in at a corner and delivered a textbook header to break the deadlock.

Yet it was an unconvincing performance from Canada, who are fifth in the FIFA women’s rankings and were quarter-finalists at the last World Cup.

Despite all their possession and passing, Canada managed just three efforts on target as they battled to get the better of the African’s defense.

Canada’s veteran captain Christine Sinclair could only muster several half chances in her bid to become the first player to score at five different women’s World Cups.

Nichelle Prince hit the outside of the post just before Buchanan’s goal and then also put a close-in effort wide on the hour mark.

But Canada almost paid a price for failing to add to the goal when Claudine Meffometou went just wide from a 70th minute corner in the only real effort of the night for Cameroon.

European champions the Netherlands open their Group E account against New Zealand in Le Havre on Tuesday.

How Qatar was humiliated by Flying Eagles.

LAGOS – Flying Eagles of Nigeria kicked off their 2019 FIFA Under-20 World Cup campaign with a 4-0 defeat of Qatar on Friday.

The coach Paul Aigbogun lads lived up to expectations from the blast of the referee’s whistle as Maxwell Effiom scored the first goal in the 12th minute of play while Henry Offia made it two in the 24th minutes for the Nigerians.

Manchester City young star, Tom Dele Bashiru scored the third goal in the 68th minutes as Olasunkanmi Aliyu capped the goals for the Nigerians in the 74th minutes.

Meanwhile, Coach Aigbogun in spite of the victory, has promised that they would not underrate any team at the ongoing tournament.

“We have started well and it is our prayer that the players will continue to live up to expectations.

“Winning the first group match is something that is good for the team, but sustaining the tempo is another thing.

“We hope to sustain the tempo in our subsequent matches.

“We are here to do our best and to make Nigeria proud,” Aigbogun told media.

“No team is a small team anymore. We want to do our best and come out top of the group.

“We have a few lads in the team that are new because we made a few changes to the team that played the African qualifiers. These players will hopefully add quality to the team.”

It would be recalled that the Flying Eagles have never won the Under-20 World Cup, with their best outings being the 1989 and 2005 editions, where they finished as runners-up behind Portugal and Argentina, respectively.

The Flying Eagles will now play the United States on Monday, May 27 in their second Group match.

In some of the other matches played on Friday, Honduras lost 0-5 to New Zealand while Colombia shocked hosts, Poland 2-0. In another match already decided Japan drew 1-1 with Ecuador.

Earlier on Thursday, Senegal had defeated Thaiti 3-0.
