Why Tribunal sacked Dino Melaye?

The senator representing Kogi West senatorial district at the Senate, Dino Melaye, has been sacked by the National Assembly election petition tribunal.
Vanguard reports that Melaye, who was a candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), was declared winner of the February 23 election by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Dissatisfied by the declaration, Senator Smart Adeyemi, who was the candidate of All Progressives Congress (APC), approached the tribunal to challenge Melaye’s victory, citing irregularities over-voting and non compliance with the electoral acts.

The three man panel led by Justice A. O. Chijioke in a unanimous judgment on Friday, August 23, accepted Adeyemi’s ground and ordered for reelection into the senatorial axis.
Reacting to the tribunal’s judgement, Melaye who is contesting in the upcoming governorship election in Kogi state said there was no cause for alarm over his sack, adding that his mandate would not be taken from him.

Legit.ng reported that the embattled senator said that even if the ruling was in his favour, it would have been appealed. He insisted that there would be fresh senatorial election in the district and that he would be Kogi’s next governor. According to him, he who laughs last laughs long.

30 Electoral recommendations to be made public by EU.

The European Union Election Observer Mission has said that Nigeria needs political will for improved electoral process in order to strengthen its democracy and achieve full potentials.
The mission stated this as part of its 30 recommendations made on the 2019 general elections, which it promised to make public on Saturday (today).
The Chief Observer of the mission, Maria Arena, gave insights into the 30 recommendations during a return visit to the National Working Committee of the All Progressives Congress in Abuja on Friday.
She said, “There is need for political will to improve the electoral process, as you know the process is always improvable. It is good for democracy.

Secondly, it is important for the process to begin as early as possible. You can say five years is a long time but when you start one year before the election it’s too late.
The last thing is to have inclusive methodology to work with Civil Society Organisations and all the stakeholders.”

The mission observed that the population of women elected in this year’s election was worse than before.
Meanwhile INEC is set to embark on reforms, including electoral legal framework, aimed at ensuring that elections in the country are credible.
The commission’s Chairman, Prof Mahmood Yakubu, disclosed this on Friday when the Chief Observer of the EUEOM, Arena, presented the EU report on the 2019 general elections to him in his office in Abuja.
Yakubu said as part of the reform process, the commission would be engaging the leadership of the National Assembly on areas that require legislation.
While that is going on, he said INEC would be implementing other aspects of the reform within its powers, in consultation with critical stakeholders.

CROSSING THE THRESHOLD OF INDEPENDENCE AT 57.—-(6 Minutes Read)

It is another annual ritual celebration of a national day of the most populated black nation in the whole world.

It is another 1st of October whereby there is always a public holiday and a national broadcast by anyone who is at the helm of affairs in Nigeria which is always a display of the relay of accomplishments, promises, visions, views and challenges that have its contents and contexts centred around peaceful coexistence of the Nigerian Nation with many stories of accomplishmnets and promises of developments and dividends of democracy.

The 1st of October 1960,is a day that remains unforgettable in the annals of Nigeria history. It is a day that is historical and its remembrance remains ad long as Nigeria as a nation remained as an indivisible entity.

It is the day Nigeria got its independence from the British colonial masters, though it was not given without the sacrifice of many great minds that ended up becoming nationalists and founding fathers who through their resilience, determination and vision made the yeranings and cravings of every Nigerian to become a reality.

eau de parfum (2)

In the course of the struggle for independence, the major actors and spectators were filled and encompassed with dreams and visions of building a nation that will be a major force to reckon with in Africa and all over the world.

At the point of lowering the union Jack for the green and white flag to come up into relevance,Nigeria as a country was standing at the threshold;d of independence and self governance purposed to birth the greatness of the most populated African Nation all over the world expected to become a reality within the shortest period of time with all Nigerians feeling the impacts of being a citizen of an independent state that is matured enough to manage and optimize available physical, material, natural and human resources effectively and efficiently in order yo build a nation that will emerge as one of the best in the league of Nations.

It is quite disturbing, appalling and disheartening that the hope and dreams of our founding fathers keeps eluding us with our national coexistence being threatened on a daily basis.A nation that is expected to be flying high at a high altitude now is still crawling and wallowing in backwardness that made many citizen to think and believed that the 1914 amalgamation of the Niger Area to Nigeria by Lord Lugard and his girlfriend–Mary Shaw was a curse and not a blessing.

The threat to our national coexistence kept rearing its ugly head in multi-faceted ways in the form of:

  1. Insecurity and militancy.
  2. Secession agitation and call for referendum
  3. Tribalism and ethnicity.
  4. Religious bigotry and crises.
  5. Extremism and Terrorism.
  6. Poor infrastructural development.
  7. Unemployment and youth unrest.
  8. Inflation,harsh economy and insurgency.
  9. Corruption, mismanagement and embezzlement of public funds.
  10. Abject poverty.
  11. Political thuggery.
  12. Nepotism.

Many policies and approaches have been developed and designed to nib these national challenges and embarrassment in the bud but there have been no tangible and meaningful results from past and present efforts of the Nigerian government.

All these have successfully been parameters and signals that are potent enough to tear into pieces the fabrics of our national existence with the reality of some ethnic groups clamouring for secession and division of the Nigeria State because many ethnic groups are embittered for being marginalised.

The rostrum of independence climbed on the 1st of October 1960 by the Nigerian State put Nigerian State on the edge of being truly independent with the hope and dreams of becoming independent gradually through the implementation of developmental policies and approaches that will launch the Nigerian State to become one of the world’s power.

Till now, it can never be an extreme view that reverse is the case.Nigeria as a nation has not been able to achieve a tittle of the dreams of the founding fathers.

Instead of moving forward in our efforts to achieve nationhood, the Nigeria State has been on a spot without moving forward or backward.

The inability of the Nigerian nation to have leaders that are focussed and goal-driven in their approach to governance is the basic bane of our national development. This has been a clog in the wheel of the progress of a nation that is populated to the tune of 193.4million people.

Our huge population and diversity ought to be maximized and optimized as a source of strength and relevance among Nations of the world but it has been a source of weakness in all ramification of our national existence.

It can be clearly seen by all and sundry that Nigeria as a nation has been unable to cross the threshold of independence envisaged by our founding fathers in fifty-seven years ago.

This is a clarion call to all and sundry to maximize this year celebration and remembrance of our national holiday as a moment of sober reflection to think deeply about solutions that will deliver our national existence from the quagmire of challenges that if it is not tamed and curtailed on time might end up shredding the fabrics of our national existence into pieces.

No doubt about it,Nigeria is stuck on the threshold of independence.

Nigeria is on a spot.

Nigeria has been unable to move forward and unable to move backward.

A nation that is unable to generate enough and sufficient power that is adequate enough to drive the developmental infrastructure of the entire country can be assumed to be backward in the comity of nations.

No wonder the statistics of unemployment keep skyrocketing on a daily basis accompanied with youth roaming about aimlessly on our street and vices and criminality has been the continuous and constant reality in our society.

No one should be high at this moment of our annual celebration because Nigeria as a nation has not been able to achieve the dreams and goals of her independence on the 1st of October 1960.

Until when next Nigeria nation will be basking in the euphoria of another independence celebration–58th anniversary this time next year,Nigeria is yet to cross the threshold of independence.

HAPPY INDEPENDENCE TO ALL NIGERIANS!!!
