Who killed Ziggy Wine?

Ugandan musician Michael Kalinda popularly known by his stage name Ziggy Wine has died following alleged attack by yet to be identified assailants.

Reports reaching on Monday, August 5, morning indicated Kalinda succumbed to his injuries at Mulago Hospital where he was admitted on Sunday evening.
Confirming the sad news, firebrand Opposition politician and fellow musician Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu alias Bobi Wine said Kalinda took his last breath on Sunday night.

“Our friend Ziggy Wine could not make it. He passed on last night, succumbing to injuries sustained after a horrendous encounter with kidnap and torture.

Very painful! He joins other countless Ugandans. As we mourn him, we resolve to work even harder to end this. Rest well brother,” the MP tweeted on Monday as he mourned his friend and supporter.

The deceased who was a member of the Firebase Crew owned by Bobi Wine was reportedly abducted by unknown people on his way to the recording studios in Kamwokya on July 21, 2019.

He was later found dumped at Mulago in bad shape and with his left eye plucked out and two fingers chopped off.

“My friend Ziggy Wine, fellow artiste and People Power comrade was kidnapped only to be found three days back tortured beyond recognition, left eye plucked out, two fingers cut off, belongings taken and left for dead,” Wine said.

How Cardi B won a legal battle against her Manager.

Cardi B has scored a victory in her legal battle with a former manager after a judge agreed to seal her taped deposition.

Lawyers representing the rapper’s ex-manager, Klenord ‘Shaft’ Raphael, urged the judge to toss her request for confidentiality, but he agreed the hitmaker’s reputation could be damaged if documents were leaked and sided with Cardi, real name Belcalis Almanzar, on Tuesday (06 Aug 19), according to The Blast.

“The Court concludes that the status of Belcalis Almanzar as a person of public interest, as well as the privacy interest enjoyed by any litigant, strongly counsel in favor of limiting the use of the video version of the deposition,” his ruling read.

“Accordingly, it is hereby ORDERED that the video version of the deposition of Belcalis Almanzar shall be used only for purposes of this litigation and shall not be filed or otherwise disseminated to any member of the public without permission of the Court.”

Shaft sued Cardi B for $10 million (£8.2 million) last year (18), claiming she breached their contract by firing him.

The rap star countersued, accusing him of taking advantage of her and taking “an unreasonable and unconscionable portion of earnings”.

Raphael has also made it clear he wants to quiz Cardi’s father, sister and Offset about his former client’s finances.

Why Ambode’s account was frozen by EFCC?

The Federal High Court in Lagos on Tuesday ordered the freezing of three bank accounts allegedly belonging to the Lagos State Government over an alleged N9.9bn fraud.
The accounts domiciled in First City Monument Bank, Access Bank and Zenith Bank are numbered 5617984012, 0060949275 and 1011691254, respectively.

Justice Chuka Obiozor ordered the “suspension” of the accounts following an ex parte application by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.

The EFCC had prayed the judge to freeze the accounts pending the conclusion of investigations and possible prosecution of the Permanent Secretary in the Office of the Chief of Staff to the Governor of Lagos State, Adewale Adesanya, for money laundering.

In an affidavit filed in support of the ex parte application, a member of the EFCC investigating team, Kungmi Daniel, said the commission discovered “a huge inflow of N9,927,714,443.29” from the state accounts into an FCMB bank account opened on September 17, 2018 during the Akinwunmi Ambode administration operated by Adesanya.

Daniel said the schedule of the FCMB account showed how Adesanya and the other signatories to the account made fraudulent transfers from the accounts of the Lagos State Government and dissipated the funds in the said accounts.

“The trend in the account is that the account always witnessed a huge inflow from Lagos State Government into the above scheduled accounts managed by the respondent (Adesanya),” the investigator said.

He said upon the receipt of intelligence, the EFCC analysed it and found it worthy of investigation.

The EFCC prayed the court to grant them an order to temporarily take over the accounts to enable them to conclude their investigations.

The EFCC said, “There have been concerted efforts and attempts to dissipate the contents of the accounts listed in the schedule to this application.

“Without freezing the nominated accounts and temporarily forfeiting the money to the Government of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, there is no way the fraud being perpetrated using the scheduled accounts can be stopped.”

After listening to submission by lawyer for the EFCC, Mohammed Abbas, Justice Obiozor granted the prayers.

He adjourned further proceedings in the matter till September 9, 2019.

The EFCC later on Tuesday issued a statement saying they had secured a freezing order by the court on an account allegedly linked to Ambode.

The PUNCH had exclusively reported in June that loyalists of the National Leader of the All Progressives Congress, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, were dragging Ambode to the EFCC for investigation.

Spokesman for the EFCC, Tony Orilade, said in a statement titled,

‘EFCC Secures Freezing Order on Accounts Linked to Ex-Gov. Ambode over Alleged N9.9bn Fraud’, said Justice Obiozor of the Federal High Court sitting in Ikoyi, Lagos, on Tuesday ordered the freezing of the sum of N9.9bn belonging to the Lagos State Government.

The money was domiciled in First City Monument Bank account number 5617984012; Access Bank account number 0060949275 and Zenith Bank account number 1011691254, respectively, according to the statement.

A source, however, told one of correspondents that the accounts had nothing to do with Ambode.

“It is mischief. The bank accounts are not the former governor’s personal accounts; they belong to the Lagos State Government and were used by the previous and present administrations for state administrative purposes,” the source added.

Ex-Chief Press Secretary to Ambode, Habib Haruna, did not take his calls, which rang out several times.

Why R.Kelly is charged for multiple federal and state sex-crime charges?

R. Kelly is now facing four sets of separate sex-crime charges, with the newest filed Monday by authorities in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
Hennepin County Attorney Mike Freeman announced at a news conference in Minneapolis that Kelly is being charged with two counts of prostitution and solicitation involving a girl under 18 for an alleged incident in 2001.
Freeman said Kelly is charged in an incident involving a girl he met at a concert. The girl sought an autograph from Kelly, and he gave her the autograph and a phone number, Freeman said.

When the girl called the number she was invited to Kelly’s hotel and offered $200 to take off her clothes and dance, the prosecutor alleged. He says Kelly took his clothes off and they danced together.
Kelly is already facing multiple federal and state sex-crime charges in three separate indictments in the Eastern District of New York, in the Northern District of Illinois and in Cook County in Illinois.

“It is despicable that Mr. Kelly used his fame in order to prey on underaged girls,” Freeman said. “While there are more numerous charges in the Illinois and federal cases, we wanted to make sure that our victim here in Minneapolis also receives a measure of justice. We fully expect that at some future date, Mr. Kelly will have to account for his actions in Hennepin County.”

Freeman says his office investigated after getting a tip from a Chicago tip line.

“We felt we had more than enough to charge based on her testimony and corroboration from her brother,” Freeman told reporters. “I don’t like buying sex from minors, and I don’t think most other people do either.”

According to the criminal complaint, the woman contacted police in January (when the anti-Kelly film series, “Surviving R. Kelly,” aired on Lifetime) to report an incident that occurred the day of Kelly’s concert on July 11, 2001. She was 17 at the time.
Freeman said the three-year statute of limitations for such cases in Minnesota only applied if Kelly remained in the state, which he did not.
Kelly’s lead defense attorney, Steve Greenberg, tweeted: “Give me a break. This is beyond absurd.”

Gloria Allred, the crusading attorney who represents multiple Kelly accusers, said she represents this newest accuser of Kelly, whom she did not identify.
But she sought to clarify that her client is not a prostitute despite the language of the charges against Kelly.

“I would like to emphasize that my client is not a prostitute. She is instead a child victim of Mr. Kelly,” Allred said in a statement emailed to USA TODAY. “My understanding from law enforcement in that state is that the only available statute for which Mr. Kelly can be charged is the prostitution statute.”

She urged Minnesota to change its laws to “more properly reflect crimes” against children.

“In its present form, some victims may be fearful of coming forward because they don’t want to be classified as prostitutes, when nothing can be further from the truth,” Allred’s statement said.

At least one other accusation in a different state, Michigan, also has been under investigation: In March, the Detroit Police Department acknowledged it was investigating allegations that Kelly sexually assaulted a 13-year-old girl in 2001 in Detroit. Police Chief James Craig issued a statement then saying Detroit police got a tip about the alleged crime from Chicago police.
Allred said she also represents that accuser, now an adult. She told USA TODAY that her client had been interviewed by police and was willing to testify about her allegations, but no charges have been filed in Michigan.

How judge ordered Zakzaky to be flown to India for proper medical attention.

A Nigerian court on Monday granted bail to a detained Shiite leader, whose case has sparked bloody protests, so that he can fly to India for medical care, his lawyer said.
Ibrahim Zakzaky, the founder of the outlawed pro-Iranian Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN), has been in detention along with his wife Zeenah Ibrahim since their arrest in December 2015.

“The judge has ordered that Zakzaky be flown to India for proper medical attention,” Femi Falana told AFP.

A member of the defence team said his wife was also allowed abroad for treatment.

The ruling could help defuse spiralling tensions with the group after the government banned it late last month on “terrorism” grounds after a spate of deadly clashes.

But the authorities have already ignored previous court orders to release Zakzaky.

Prosecutors told AFP officials were studying the latest decision to see whether to appeal.

Falana said the Shiite leader and his wife did not attend Monday’s hearing in in the northern city of Kaduna because of their poor health.

“They were too sick to be physically present in court,” Falana told AFP, adding that necessary legal documents would have to be signed before they could be released.

Zakzaky, who is believed to be aged in his mid-sixties, was arrested in 2015 after violence that rights groups say saw the army kill some 350 of his followers and bury many in mass graves.

Supporters have been holding almost daily protests in the capital Abuja pushing for his release amid fears over his deteriorating health.

At least eight people, including six protesters, a senior police officer and a trainee journalist, were killed during protests on July 22.

Zakzaky’s lawyers say he has lost the sight in one eye and was on the verge of going blind in the other, while he had some bullet fragments lodged in his body from the 2015 crackdown.

A court in 2016 ordered Zakzaky and his wife released — but the authorities refused and filed charges against him including homicide.

Zakzaky and the IMN, which was founded as a student group in the 1970s, have been at loggerheads with the government for years because of his call for an Iranian-style Islamic revolution in Nigeria.

For past days now,she has been loud about today telling everyone on her way that today is her mum’s birthday.

She has made it a point of duty singing birthday ryhms in the hearing of the whole house reminding her mum what her mum must buy for her birthday.

The consciousness and sensitivity of ‘little mama’ to a day like this got me thinking about how I spent my childhood days.I don’t think I spent it the way little ones of today has 🐝 spending it.

Anyway, the reason might be due to exposure and places of residents. While I grew up in Ilesa, she is spending her lifetime in Lagos coupled with the realities of human existence in this age.

In other not to digress from the subject matter,I have been held down not knowing what to present this morning but it is impossible for me not to pen few lines on my timeline celebrating my heartbeat in life.

She has been golden in every facet of her life with calmness, gentleness and candour been her strength.

Virtues that I silently crave for and always put to rest in my personal life.

She has remained an epitome of beauty and a diadem of many colours. Her support to everyone around her is amazing to the point that I always ask her to be a little bit careful and conscious.

I doubt if I will ever be complete if I missed being her husband. Her contributions made me to have every reason to be focused and be a home boy .

What else can we say at this moment other than spending my time to celebrate an ebony and an Amazon that God gave to me at this moment of my life.

She is a year older today.

She is a year better today.

She is a year booming today.

She has been an exhibition of goodness every man should crave for.

She has been an answer to my prayer requests years ago.

I am grateful for keeping her to see the beauty of today. It has been God that has made it possible for you to be alive today.

Many waters has gone bye and you have been able to stay afloat becoming better in every area of life.

You have been successful in every area of life. You have a source of hope and help to people around you.

If I am chanced,I could have spend eternity celebrating you.

If I am chanced,I would spend the whole of my world telling the world the innate beauty in you.

You are a woman every woman should hold on to.

You are a mother that should be a source of inspiration to the entire woman world.

Today is your day,my beloved.

All I have to do is to wish you well and remind you how lovely you are.

Another 5th of August is around, let’s celebrate and pop champagne.

My beloved is a year older.

Why Sanwo-Olu ordered agency to rid the Lagos state’s highways of environmental nuisance.

The Lagos State Parks and Gardens Agency says it has commenced the regeneration of degraded areas across the state in line with Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s Executive Order.
The agency said the governor had ordered the agency and others to rid the state’s highways of environmental nuisance.

In a statement by the General Manager of LASPARK, Mrs Bilikiss Adebiyi-Abiola, the agency said the intervention would complement the ongoing clean-up exercise on major roads across the state by various government agencies.

“The reclamation operation is to salvage the aesthetic environment of strategic areas in the state that have been defiled by chaotic activities in recent years. This is also in line with the ‘THEMES Agenda’ of promoting healthy living, sustainable environment and safety of lives and property in any part of the state,” she said.

Adebiyi-Abiola stated that the government planned to uplift the face of the state in order to open it up for more decent commercial and economic ventures to complement the state’s commitment to the greening project and to further create an appealing ambience befitting of a 21st century city.

According to her, the agency has commenced clearing of vegetation and planting of trees on the Lagos-Badagry Expressway from Eric Moore to Trade Fair.

She said in line with the LASPARK’s mandate, all road setbacks, road embankments, loops, medians and open spaces across the state would be aggressively sanitised and adorned with trees and beautiful flowers in a bid to ensuring a greener and healthier environment.

The GM acknowledged that making the environment clean and habitable for everyone would enhance socio-economic activities, and implored residents to conduct themselves in a way that would help preserve the environment.

“The government is poised more than ever to prosecute anyone or group of persons undermining its efforts towards strengthening the greening culture across the state,” he said.

How Jennifer Lopez embarked on a spiritual journey to Israel.

Jennifer Lopez is ringing in her 50s with a spiritual journey in Israel.
The singer, her daughter Emme and sister Lynda went sightseeing in Jerusalem on Friday (02Jul19), the day after her Yarkon Park show in Tel Aviv, and visited the ancient city’s Western Wall.
J.Lo, who turned 50 last month (Jul19), caused a stir among the faithful, who gather at the wall to pray, by opting to wear an unbuttoned shirt, exposing a little of her b**.

Flanked by bodyguards, she knelt, placed her hands on the wall, also known as the Wailing Wall, and prayed silently.

Prior to her trip to Israel, Jennifer was urged to boycott the gig as a protest about the way Israeli leaders treat their Palestinian neighbours and when she refused, she was accused of choosing sides in the long standing Middle East conflict.

Her manager Benny Medina said,

“There was nothing that was gonna stop us from being in Israel. It’s really simple: Tel Aviv and Israel deserve Jennifer Lopez, and Jennifer Lopez deserves Israel.”

Pastor Adeboye appealed to the congregation to pray for the release of abducted Pastors.

The Cable reported that Oyeyemi listed the names of the five people abducted as: Chidioze Eluwa, Chiemela Iroha, Okoro Ohowukwe, Ndubuizi Owuabueze, and Ibeleji Chidinma.

Recall that earlier reported that the Ogun police command on Friday, August 2 confirmed the kidnapping of five persons by gunmen at J3/J4 Area, Ogbere, on the Benin-Ijebu-Ode-Sagamu expressway.
The general overseer of the RCCG, Pastor Enoch Adeboye, had on Friday morning disclosed that five ministers of the church on their way to the Ministers’ Conference were kidnapped on Thursday night.

How Messi was suspended for making accusation of corruption.

ASUNCION, Paraguay (AP) Soccer body CONMEBOL suspended Lionel Messi from international matches with Argentina for three months because of accusations of corruption he made at the latest Copa America.
The South American body also said Friday that it fined the superstar in $50,000 for his comments after Argentina’s 2-1 win against Chile in the third-place playoff of the tournament in July.

Messi and Argentina can still appeal the decision, which stops the striker from playing in four friendlies this year.

The 32-year-old will not play for Argentina matches in September against Chile and Mexico, plus another two in October versus Germany and another adversary to be picked.

Neither Messi nor Argentina’s soccer association have made comments about CONMEBOL’s decision.

Messi is already suspended from the first match of the South American World Cup qualifiers next March because of the apparently undeserved red card he received against Chile.

The Argentine was sent off for only the second time in his career after a shoving match with Chile midfielder Gary Medel, who also was ejected.

Messi avoided the medal ceremony in protest and later said Argentina ”shouldn’t take part in this corruption.”

The Argentinian also said the tournament was set for hosts Brazil to win.

Messi had already complained against Copa America refereeing after Argentina’s 2-0 loss to Brazil in the semifinals.

When asked if he feared being suspended for his comments, he said ”the truth needed to be told.” Messi later sent an apology to CONMEBOL for his remarks.

How Wall Street Journals reported secret military burial in Nigeria.

Military authorities secretly buried more than 1,000 soldiers, who were killed in the battle with insurgents, in a bid create the impression that the counter-insurgency had been won, The Wall Street Journal, has reported.
The newspaper reported that military sources said the number of soldiers buried in that manner could be higher than 1,000.

But the Defence Headquarters has dismissed the report, saying it had no graveyards where soldiers were secretly buried. It said that fallen heroes were given full military burial according to global best practices.

However, the paper insisted that on the eve of President Muhammadu Buhari’s visit to Borno State in November, army commanders secretly moved corpses of soldiers from a morgue to unmarked graves at Maimalari.

Quoting soldiers, diplomats and senior government officials, the newspaper stated that the corpses were covertly transported in a truck from a mortuary in the dead of the night and buried in “trenches dug by infantrymen or local villagers paid a few dollars per shift.”

“Several of my comrades were buried in unmarked graves at night,” said a soldier from the Maimalari barracks, where more than 1,000 soldiers are based.

“They are dying and being deleted from history,” the soldier added.

The newspaper quoted a senior government official as saying that the secret gravesite at Maimalari was not the only one in Nigeria’s troubled North-East.

Nigerian Army still struggling against insurgents.

It stated that although Buhari had “repeatedly claimed his army has won, the reality is that Africa’s largest land force—a US counterterrorism ally—is struggling against an insurgency that first flared a decade ago and is now rejuvenated by the Islamic State and the return of fighters from Libya, Syria and Iraq.

“The insurgents now control hundreds of square miles of territory across four countries around the Lake Chad basin, a crossroads of Africa where the US, the UK and French military have bases or provide special-forces training. On Sunday, gunmen attacked a funeral on the outskirts of Maiduguri, killing at least 65 people, according to government officials.”

According to the report, Nigeria’s government last summer stopped reporting the deaths of soldiers in its fight with Boko Haram insurgents and a splinter group that calls itself Islamic State West Africa Province, or ISWAP.

The Wall Street Journal quoting military officials stated, “The sprawling secret graveyard in Maiduguri and an official cemetery at the base, the operational command for the north-eastern front in Borno State, now hold the bodies of at least 1,000 soldiers killed since the terror groups began an offensive last summer.”

I am not sure my husband was buried where I was shown – Woman

The newspaper said in November that one of the deceased soldiers’ wife, Mercy Tamuno, was told that her husband, Adah, had been killed in an insurgent attack on an outpost in Cross Kauwa, a town about 100 miles north of Maiduguri.

The media organisation stated, “When she demanded to see where he was buried, she was taken to the official cemetery at Maimalari, where graves are marked with plywood headstones. There she was led to a spot marked with a plastic bottle with her husband’s name written on it.”

Mrs Tamuno told the newspaper, “It was the only one marked in this way. I’m not sure it was his grave but that’s what the army told me.”

The report said that two soldiers from Lance Cpl. Tamuno’s unit said he had been buried days earlier in the secret graveyard.

According to them, the plastic bottle was prepared to appease his wife.

“We know he was buried in the unmarked grave. There was no funeral,” one of them said.

The Wall Street Journal reported that a 50-year-old farmer, Sarah James, said the secret cemetery at the Maimalari barracks grew as the military had expanded the site into neighbouring fields.

“The farmland has been fenced off so they can bury the forces,” she said.

James said she and her colleagues gave up land they had farmed for years to make way for the expansion of the base’s cemetery.

The newspaper said Nigeria’s military built a barrier to ward off what had been farmland on the northern edge of the base in Maiduguri.

The report stated,

“Units that have suffered casualties and declining morale aren’t in a position to attack, and are instead defending poorly constructed bases in exposed areas against an increasingly well-equipped enemy.”

“There is a systemic misrepresentation of the war that is having severe tactical and operational consequences,” a former soldier, Chidi Nwaonu, was quoted to have said.

He said the bravery of troops was being undermined by poor decisions of senior commanders. “It’s part cock-up, part conspiracy,” he added.

After an attack by the insurgents on the army base in Metele in November, the newspaper quoted a soldier to have said, “See the weapons they bring here. These are not working. No less than 100-plus soldiers died here. Many are missing in action; they are nowhere to be found.”

Military said my brother was fine until I saw him killed in B’Haram video – Journalist

It said that a journalist based in Abuja, Timothy Olanrewaju, said the military told him that his brother, a sergeant, was safely on deployment.

It added that Olanrewaju could not reach his brother, Sgt. Samuel Olanrewaju, for four months, but commanders repeatedly assured him that his brother was well, stationed in a sensitive combat zone.

According to the report, Olanrewaju learned of his brother’s fate when the Islamic State published a video that showed his execution. “I couldn’t believe my eyes,” he said.

“Why didn’t they tell me the truth?” he asked.

The newspaper stated, “The military’s secrecy about casualties is so widespread it is unclear whether Nigeria’s political leaders are aware of the state of the conflict. We could see the headlamps and the torches of the engineering division digging the graves,” said a soldier.

Although Buhari had said that insurgents had been defeated, the Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Tukur Buratai, in June said soldiers’ lack of commitment was affecting the war against insurgency.

The Presidency directed The PUNCH to the Defence Headquarters to address the issue, adding that it was a military matter.

The Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Mr Garba Shehu, stated, “On the issue of (1,000) soldiers, talk to the military. Talk to the Defence Headquarters about this.”

Military buries soldiers with gun salutes, not secret graves – DHQ

In its reaction, the Defence Headquarters said it had no graveyards where soldiers were secretly buried, noting that fallen heroes were honoured with gun salutes, solemn prayers, among others.

The military denied the allegation in a release by the acting Director, Defence Information, Col. Onyema Nwachukwu, on Thursday, saying that soldiers who paid the supreme price were given their “last respects in a befitting military funeral ceremony of international standard.”

Nwachukwu noted that the Maimalari cemetery, described in the publication, was not secretbut the military officially-designated cemetery for soldiers in the North-East theatre, with a “cenotaph erected in honour of our fallen heroes.”

Nwachukwu said,

“The Defence Headquarters has noted with dismay an article purporting that the Nigerian military maintains secret graveyards in the North-East theatre of operation. The armed forces of Nigeria have a rich and solemn tradition for the interment of our fallen heroes. Therefore, it must be unambiguously clarified that the Armed Forces do not indulge in secret burials, as it is sacrilegious and a profanity to the extant ethos and traditions of the Nigerian military.

“In tandem with the traditions of the Armed Forces, fallen heroes are duly honoured and paid the last respects in befitting military funerals of international standard, featuring funeral parade, grave site oration, solemn prayers for the repose of departed souls by Islamic and Christian clerics, as well as gun salutes, aside from other military funeral rites.

“The cemetery described in the publication, which is situated in Maimalari military cantonment is an officially designated military cemetery for the Armed Forces of Nigeria in the North-East theatre, with a cenotaph erected in honour of our fallen heroes. The official cemetery has played host to several national and international dignitaries, where wreaths were laid in honour of the fallen heroes. It is therefore a far cry from the sacrilegious impression being painted by the Wall Street Journal.”

Atiku calls for commission of inquiry

But the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, Atiku Abubakar, called on Buhari to constitute a judicial commission of inquiry headed by a non-partisan and reputable jurist, to unravel the authenticity of the report.

Atiku, in a statement, said if the report was true, he received it with a sense of heartbreak and shock.

According to him, it is heart-breaking for the families and friends of those soldiers who, if the report was true, had lost their loved ones, without being allowed to bury them or even to have any sense of closure as regards their fate.

He said,

“I shudder to think that the cover-up of such an event of epic proportions can be true. The men and women of our armed forces are our first, second and last defence against our domestic and foreign enemies and should be treated with love, respect, dignity and appreciation for the invaluable service they render to Nigeria.”

He added.

“To ensure that we get to the bottom of this matter, I urge that a Judicial Commission of Inquiry headed by a non-partisan and reputable jurist, be inaugurated to investigate the findings of the Wall Street Journal.”

How R. Kelly bail application was rejected.

R. Kelly pleaded not guilty Friday to charges he sexually exploited young women and girls who attended his concerts, appearing in a federal courtroom in Brooklyn packed with his supporters. For a second time, he was denied bail, according to the U.S. attorney’s office in the Eastern District of New York.

Kelly was arraigned on a second federal indictment accusing him of being the leader of a “racketeering enterprise” that recruited women and girls for illegal sexual encounters with him, including transporting them across state lines.

In the afternoon Kelly appeared before U.S. District Judge Ann Donnelly for a status hearing, where the next hearing in the case was set for October, according to John Marzulli, spokesman for the U.S. attorney’s office in Brooklyn.

Kelly’s attorneys said he would waive his appearance for that hearing. Marzulli said he will be transported back to Chicago where is expected at hearings in August and September in the two other sex-crime cases pending against him in Illinois.

The arraignment Friday was preceded by controversy after his lawyer in the New York case, Douglas Anton, said he was unable to meet with him after he arrived from Chicago on Thursday.

Anton complained in a letter to a federal magistrate late Thursday that he couldn’t find him. Anton said federal Bureau of Prison officials, who flew Kelly into a New Jersey airport on Thursday afternoon, were unhelpful in explaining where he was so that he could meet with his client before the hearing, according to the New York Post and NBC News.

NBC posted video of Kelly arriving at New Jersey’s Teterboro Airport. Wearing a tan prison shirt and orange shoes, the R&B star had his hands cuffed in front of him and shuffled along the tarmac as an officer escorted him to a waiting pickup truck.

As of Friday morning, Kelly was in the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn; as of Thursday night, prison records showed he was still in the Metropolitan Correctional Center in Chicago.

During the status hearing before Judge Donnelly, Assistant U.S. Attorney Elizabeth Geddes said prosecutors will start turning over discovery next week.

Marzulli said both sides are working on a protective order for evidence in the case; in Chicago, the U.S. district judge presiding over that case has already issued a protective order that bars attorneys from talking publicly about new evidence in the case, a move aimed at ensuring the case isn’t tried in the media.

Kelly was represented at the arraignment by Anton, a New Jersey-based lawyer who also is Kelly’s entertainment attorney. Anton argued Kelly should be released while awaiting trial so that he could better fight charges he dismissed as “groupie remorse.”

Prosecutors argued that Kelly should be kept in jail because he’s a flight risk and a potential “danger” to the community.

Although the defense lost the bid to get Kelly released, Kelly’s lawyers said they will ask Judge Donnelly to reconsider that decision made by a federal magistrate.

Kelly is charged in a five-count indictment with racketeering, sexual exploitation of children, kidnapping, forced labor and Mann Act violations involving the coercion and transportation of women and girls in interstate commerce to engage in illegal sexual activity, according to the U.S. Attorney’s office.

Kelly has been locked up in Chicago since July 11 on another federal indictment by the Northern District of Illinois on similar sex-crime charges, including possession and production of child pornography.

Kelly has already pleaded not guilty to the federal charges in Illinois. He was denied bond and was locked up in the Metropolitan Correctional Center in Chicago until he was taken to New York.

Kelly also is facing state sex-crime charges in Cook County. Earlier this year, he pleaded not guilty to two sets of multiple sex-crimes, including aggravated criminal sexual assault, criminal sexual assault by force, aggravated criminal sexual abuse and aggravated criminal sexual abuse against an accuser between the ages of 13 and 17.

Until he was arrested on the federal indictments, he had been free on bond in the state case.

Prior to the hearing, Anton told USA TODAY that the New York case is based on “two misdemeanors being used as predicates for a RICO (racketeering act) case.”

In a hint of his defense strategy in the New York case, Anton said the adult woman accuser in the case is also suing Kelly in civil court. Based on what she claims in that suit, Anton said, the woman traveled voluntarily to see Kelly perform and “hang out with him, like any groupie does” for more than a year.

He claimed the charges against Kelly come down to “simple ‘groupie regret’ ” by adult fans, some of whom lied about their age to make them older or younger, and who sought to hang out with “a superstar.”

“We hold the position that persecution of this particular client is an unprecedented assault against Mr. Kelly by those who seek undeserved notoriety and for their own personal gain,” Anton told USA TODAY. “Mr. Kelly is innocent until and unless proven guilty by a jury of his peers.”

Anton also has been sparing with prosecutors in the Eastern District over the charges in the case and their reasons why Kelly should be locked up until his trial. Among them: Kelly allegedly gave herpes to one of the accusers in the case, who is not named, after unprotected and undisclosed sex. Failure to disclose an infectious venereal disease is illegal in New York, U.S. Attorney Richard Donoghue said in his filing.

In his 12-page response filed Tuesday with Judge Donnelly, Anton tries to dismantle the prosecution’s case for keeping Kelly locked up, and the underlying charges themselves. He specifically goes after the “Kelly gave me herpes” claim by the then-19-year-old accuser, who is also suing Kelly in civil court on the claim.

Anton mocked the government’s argument that Kelly would be dangerous due to the herpes claim if released on bond. “What is the claim in the NY case? That he will get out of jail and go randomly have unprotected sex?” Anton wrote.

Since the federal indictments, federal prosecutors in both New York and Illinois have insisted that Kelly be kept locked up pending trials. Prosecutor Geddes reiterated that on Friday, saying Kelly and his inner circle had a history of paying off and intimidating witnesses in past cases.

“There’s a serious risk he’ll attempt to obstruct justice,” Geddes said.

In Chicago, Kelly’s lead defense attorney, Steven Greenberg, has argued that Kelly has no means to flee because he has no money. Plus, he says, Kelly doesn’t like to fly.

Greenberg filed a motion Thursday in Chicago asking the judge in the case there to release Kelly pending trial, arguing that the allegations against him are “as stale as used gym socks.”

“The idea that Mr. Kelly has the means and wherewithal to obstruct any witness against him is frankly preposterous,” Greenberg wrote.

In Chicago, Kelly had been in solitary confinement in an isolated holding area as a safety precaution due to his celebrity status, according to the acting U.S. marshal in Chicago, Jason Wojdylo. At a hearing last week before U.S. District Judge Harry Leinenweber, Wojdylo said Kelly had “declined an opportunity” to have a cellmate or to move into general population, but he didn’t explain why.

Wojdylo also said, without explaining why, that he had concerns about transporting Kelly to New York, and asked if Kelly could enter a plea in the New York case by video from Chicago. Leinenweber said Kelly had a right to stand in person before the New York federal judge. Kelly’s attorneys said he wanted to go to New York despite the unexplained difficulties of transporting him.

Meanwhile, federal prosecutors in Illinois said at the hearing that more charges and more defendants could be added to the case there against Kelly. Assistant U.S. Attorney Angel Krull said a more far-ranging indictment is expected soon, although she offered no details.

Kelly already has two co-defendants, his ex-manager Derrel McDavid and former employee Milton Brown, who pleaded not guilty to paying hundreds of thousands of dollars to retrieve pornographic videos Kelly allegedly made, as a mean to avoid criminal charges.

How SERAP reveals Nigeria Police as one of the two most corrupt sector in Nigeria.

The Nigerian Police Force (NPF) and power sector was on Wednesday, July 31, described by the Socio-Economic Rights And Accountability Project (SERAP) as being among the most corrupt institutions in Nigeria.

According to SERAP, corruption in Nigeria, despite the efforts of the federal government, has not reduced especially in public offices in the last five years, adding that this is so because not all hands are on deck in the struggle against crime, Channels TV reports.

Adekunle Adewunmi, an associate at the Center for Social-Legal Studies, said:

“The fact that the government has not gotten support has been a major issue.

“So, if we are going to win the war against corruption in Nigeria, everyone needs to agree that yes, we are tired of this menace.”

The agency’s position was also confirmed by Transparency International which has ranked Nigeria 144 out of 180 countries in the 2018 global corruption perception index.

Meanwhile, reported that a survey by the Transparency International (TI) had put the police as the most corrupt institution in Nigeria, followed by the country’s parliament and the judiciary.

Transparency International said corruption was hindering Africa’s economic, political and social development.
