New Zealand Mosque Shooting Suspect Smirks, Flashes White Power Sign In Court

A suspect in Friday’s mass shootings at two mosques in Christchurch, New Zealand, appeared to flash a “white power” sign during his first court appearance on Saturday.

Brenton Harrison Tarrant, a 28-year-old from Australia, reportedly smirked and used his shackled right hand to make the “OK” symbol, which the Southern Poverty Law Center notes has been adopted in recent years by white nationalists, neo-Nazis and Klansmen following its emergence as an online trolling hoax.

The SPLC notes that the sign can have multiple meanings.

At least 49 Muslim worshippers were shot dead by two gunmen
at two mosques in Christchurch, New Zealand, on Friday.

Three people, armed when captured, have been detained by New
Zealand Police. One of the three, a 28-year-old man, has been
  charged with murder.

  Here's a timeline showing how New Zealand's deadliest-ever
  mass shooting elapsed.

At least 49 people were killed on Friday when two separate men
opened fire at worshippers at two mosques in the city of
  Christchurch, New Zealand.

41 people were killed with an automatic weapon at the Masjid Al
Noor mosque on Deans Avenue, and eight others were shot by a
separate gunman at a mosque in Linwood, 3.5 miles to the east.

Neither shooter was on a terrorism watch list, police said, and
the attack was "very well-planned." One other armed person was
  arrested.

24 hours before the shooting a 74-page manifesto appeared online,
its author promised to carry out a terror attack on Muslims in
  Christchurch.

It said: "I am just a regular White man, from a regular family.
Who decided to take a stand to ensure a future for my people."

Here's how the massacre unfolded in real time:

“So when someone flashes the ‘OK sign’ with that knowing smirk, it’s not just a harmless act that can be dismissed,” the SPLC writes. “It may or may not mean that they are a white nationalist attempting a sly signal. But the sign unquestionably identifies the user as one thing: a troll.”

The manifesto the shooter posted online includes multiple instances of apparent trolling. Still, the document described a pronounced a hatred of Muslims and praised U.S.-based extremist movements.
